Boulder Colorado’s Garden of the Gods, The View Looking Down

This morning I posted some photos I took yesterday afternoon. My wife and I hiked the Red Rocks trail on the West side of Boulder and hung out in the sun for a few hours. The weather was fabulous and the sky was deep blue. You could almost feel spring knocking on the door.

This morning’s photos were mostly of the rock formations. Below are a couple of shots looking down on downtown Boulder and also Colorado University. You can see the stadium in the distance on the left side of the second photo. I also included one more photo of the rock formations.

Red Rocks: Boulder Colorado’s Garden of the Gods

On the west side of Boulder at the end of Pearl Street is the trail head to Red Rocks, Boulder’s Garden of the Gods. A short hike up a steep hill leads to a huge out-crop of red rocks comprised of sandstone.

The views are incredible looking out over the city of Boulder and the plains below. With this posting I am going to show the photographs of the rocks looking up. In another post I’ll show the photographs looking down over Boulder. Enjoy!

Denver January/February Real Estate Market Snapshot

MarketThe number of homes sold for January ’10 was up +9% compared to January ’09 but February didn’t change much for the same time period. However, prices increased by +11% in February ’10 compared to ’09. Prices increased by +9% in January.  The good news is that home sales in Denver is steady or increasing slightly and not declining like it is in much of the US.

The average price of a home sold—currently $265k—has been gradually increasing over the past year although this is a little bit misleading. When we saw double-digit declines of home prices a few years ago, that was due to selling many small REO homes. Nicer homes were not selling. That change in mix drove most of the price decline. But in today’s market we are now seeing the opposite effect.

DOM (Days on Market) declined in Feb ’09 vs. Feb ’10, from 104 to 92 days.  We had a similar pattern in January.  A decline in DOM usually foreshadows a market recovery.  This is great news for the long term health of our market.

Colorado Mountain Wonderland: Simultaneous Moonset And Sunrise

I took these two photographs early this morning. The first one shows the beginning of the Moon setting behind southern portion the Flatiron Range in Boulder County. The second image shows the morning sun just as it’s hitting Long’s Peak. There is about a 90 degree angle between the two views.

Together, these two photographs capture the polarities of change from night to day as the moon sets and the sun rises. These images are a moment in time reflecting the duality of nature and in life.

Flower Photos: The Face of Nature Smiling Back At Us

A week or so ago I saw a blog about becoming aware of the beauty of nature in your back yard. It was very insightful and thought provoking way of getting you take a closer look at what is right in front of us. The blog included a couple of close up photographs of colorful flowers.

I remember thinking that’s great for folks in Florida and Southern California, but my yard is full of snow and brown grass. I looked and looked but couldn’t come up with anything that seemed to be worth photographing in my backyard. And just when I let go of the idea, my eyes locked on caught the flowers on the dining room table.

So here they are. The flowers are not from my backyard, but still a nice close-up look at the beauty of nature right in front of me. It made me think that we are surrounded by beauty all the time is we would just open our eyes a little wider to what is right in front of us.

Eagle Eye: Nature's Glory at Her Best--Powerful, Proud and Gracious...

On the way out the door on the way to church I grabbed my camera. I remember hesitating for a moment and wondering why I felt moved to bring it but deciding to just follow the impulse. Then on the drive to church my wife, Hannele, and I noticed a huge eagle sitting in a tree right next to the road.

I stopped the car and grabbed my camera and starting shooting. I walked right up near the tree and was able to get a half dozen or so shots before the eagle took off. I also managed to get one shot with it in flight but it’s slightly out of focus.

The eagle was so beautiful. There were a few moments when it seemed like it was just the two of us. It was looking right at me with a powerful glance. It almost seemed magical. Needless to say, it made our day—at least part of it.

Nature’s glory is often so awe inspiring. That’s especially true when it just happens. I suppose it is all just as it is meant to be.
