Coy Ponds at The Self Realization Fellowship Center in Encinitas California

Coy Ponds at The Self Realization Fellowship Center in Encinitas California

I took the photo below at the Self Realization Fellowship Center, also known as the Hermitage, during a trip with my wife Hannele two years ago. The Hermitage was established by Yogananda in 1937. He lived at the Hermitage for many years and wrote the spiritual classic, ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’ during his time there.

There is a beautiful meditation flower garden on the hillside and along the cliff’s edge overlooking the Pacific Ocean. On the hillside in a shaded region are a beautiful set of coy ponds. The fish are huge and move about so elegantly in the water. It’s truly a magical setting. We enjoyed a peaceful and relaxing time just sitting by the ponds and watching the fish for a while. Just being there was like a form of meditation.

In Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and His Legacy with Civil Rights Worldwide

In Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and His Legacy with Civil Rights Worldwide

Martin Luther KingI was born in Memphis Tennessee and lived there until I was 14 years old when we moved to a small farm in southern Indiana. I was 8 years old when Martin Luther King was killed.

I was too young to know what it meant or why it happened. But even as a child I knew of him and how he was fighting for the rights of African-Americans. Of course I didn’t really understand what that meant but I do remember being surprised that there were people living around me that were not able to enjoy the same rights and freedoms as me. As a child it was all very strange and difficult to understand.

I remember the strike by the garbage workers and I remember how the news media instilled fear in the public. I felt that fear even as a child and I didn’t even know what it was really about. I am ashamed to say that many of the adults in my life fueled the fear with their own ignorance and misguided words. I remember feeling terrified and uncertain about what would happen next. On a personal level what would happen next for me is I would begin to grow up.

When Martin Luther King was killed I remember feeling incredibly sad and confused. Why would anyone want to do that to someone? The curfews and the fear that filled the air initiated my innocence. Looking back, I can see that the days and weeks around that event was the beginning of the end of my childhood.

EarthFast forward to today on this national holiday in his honor and the legacy with civil rights in America. With news of the many rallies and marches all across the country in remembrance of all he stood for and that he fought for I feel humbled. I can feel myself growing up just a little bit more.

With the nation’s first African-American as president in Washington, we have come so far. Yes, we still have a long way to go but there is a lot to be thankful for. Hope is alive and well. Maybe we can all grow up just a little bit more on this day.

May  God Bless us All and not just in this country, but all around the world on this great Planet Earth we all call home.

Let the New Year Begin: A New Outlook for 2010

fireworksLet the New Year Begin: A New Outlook for 2010

Tweet ThisWell, here we are—it’s 2010 at last. Last year could not have ended any sooner as far as I am concerned.

I am excited to get started with the New Year and a new outlook. I have always been a big fan of setting goals. For many years I have diligently mapped my goals and objectives along with a plan of action to accomplish them. This year I’ve decided to take a different approach.

I still have goals and objectives for the year and I am still mapping a plan of action to accomplish them. The difference is that I aim to balance my forward looking ambition with a heightened sense of conscious awareness of where I am moment-to-moment.

DropIn simple words, I choose to be more present in every aspect of my life. I don’t want to miss anything that comes my way.

I want to hear the people that are speaking to me and let them know that I hear them. I want to see the things I miss when my mind is racing along thinking about someone, somewhere or something else other than who I’m with, where I’m at, and what’s in front of me now.

Be Here NowI want to fully engage my capacity to accomplish my goals by making peace with the present moment first. I will then use the contrast between where I am and where I choose to be (my goals) to energize my thoughts, words and deeds toward accomplishing what I set out to be, have and do.

Most importantly, I want to live and enjoy the fullness of life in every moment and not just when I am ‘off duty.’

This is my outlook for 2010...

How about You?
