A Christmas Cactus That Celebrates Many Times A Year

I have a plant that I have always known as a Christmas Cactus because it blossoms during the holiday season every year. I have had many of these over the years but the one I have now is different. It blossoms many times during the year. I am beginning to wonder if I have it mixed up with something else or if it just likes to celebrate Christmas throughout the year.

Over the last couple of years it has blossomed many times throughout the year with no set pattern that I can recognize. The blossoms are really beautiful although hard to see because of the way the limbs dangle down. I took this photo this morning.

Yellow Orchids

The first photo below was taken back in November near my wife’s birthday. The orchid was a birthday gift from a friend at church. This is one of the biggest orchids I have ever seen. With the flowers in full bloom, it was about 3 foot high and equally as wide. The flowers were so large and heavy that the plant had to be secured against the arm of a chair.

The second photo was taken today. Orchids blossom in a most extraordinary way and then, almost without notice, they lose their flowers. I don’t really understand their seasonality, but as I was watering the plant today it made me think about how we sometimes follow a similar pattern.

We all blossom in a most radiant way at different times in our life. And then we retreat for a while to gain new strength, wisdom and insight before blossoming again. Life is a cycle of cycles—flowers bloom and then they wither and fall. But with each new blossom, is a new opportunity to be bigger, better and ever more vibrant.

A Colorado Classic Sunrise Full of Color and Contrast

I took this photo a few days ago looking Southwest off my back deck at sunrise. The colors were incredible. They look interesting in the photograph but nothing like the real thing. It was truly amazing. The clouds were all lit up bright red and pink and the sky had an unusual deep blue color. The white snow seemed to add extra contrast to the image.

Nature's Air Force Patrolling the Coast

The shot below was taken during a trip my wife and I made to Southern California a while back. While walking near the beach we were captivated by the pelican’s flying overhead. They seemed to move with such effortless ease while staying in near perfect formation. Although the birds are large and a bit awkward on land, they move gracefully through the air.

Free Spirit Captured in Bronze

The bronze statues in the first photo are located along the roadside near the corner of Indiana Street and McCaslin Blvd. on the west side of Superior.  The second photo is located by the public swimming pool on Huron Peak Avenue.

These statues capture the free spirit of childhood adventure. There are other similar statues at various other spots throughout the area. Most of them are children playing and just having fun. For me these statues represent the child inside us all that is certain to live forever.

Sunrise on Boulder’s Snow Capped Flatiron Range

This is the view of the Flatirons off my back deck looking across open space just as the sun was rising this morning. Eldorado Middle School is in the foreground. We got about 6-8 inches of snow in and around the foothills near the Flatiron Range between yesterday and last night. I love the contrast of the early morning sunshine on the fresh snow.
