Long’s Peak: On Top of the Summit

These are the photos I took while on the summit of Long's Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park. All of the other photos I've posted before now were taken on the way up. In the photo of me the marker under my foot reads 14,255 feet above sea level.

I stayed on the summit for a while and had a short but deeply fulfilling meditation while there. It was a feeling of pure elation with every breath.

My ecstasy was tempered with a mild terror in knowing I would once again have to navigate the same cliffs and ledges I came up on...

Long’s Peak: From the Key Hole to the Gulley

This set of photos is from the Keyhole, up the gulley and around the East side of the peak. This was the final leg of my hike to the summit of Long's Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park. This was the most challenging part of the hike both going up and going down.

I faced many fears during this part and at one point I almost turned around. There were many places along this part of the hike where I was just one step away from going over the side of the mountain.

A Really Big Shoe…

On the hike up to Long’s Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park I encountered an interesting natural artifact on top of one of the peaks. It sits on the south side of Long’s Peak about half way up the gulley that leads to the ledge along the east side.

The rock looks like a giant shoe and it sits on top of a peak at an elevation of about 13,500 feet. It is amazingly balanced on top of the peak like a natural sculpture placed by a hand much larger than any human you could imagine.

I am wondering what happens when the shoe drops?

Long’s Peak Hike: The Keyhole

This is the second set of photos from my hike to the summit of Long's Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park. This set was taken just before and just after the Keyhole. The Keyhole is quite large and it's no small feat to climb up to it.

Before the Keyhole it was a nice hike. After the Keyhole everything became serious: serious views, serious elevation change, and very serious danger. From the Keyhole onward you are literally one step away from falling over steep cliffs.

The views after the Keyhole are breathtaking. The trail is marked by paint spots on the boulders. You have to take care to aim for the next marker or you'll end up off the trail like I did a couple of times. That's partly because the trail is not really a trail. It's just a bunch of boulders and steep ledges you climb over and around.

The fear factor steadily increased with every step after the Keyhole.

Long’s Peak Summit Hike: Approaching Boulder Field

Here are some more photos from my hike to the summit of Long’s Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park last Friday. This set captures the approach to Boulder Field at 12,760 feet nearly 6 miles into the hike. As the name implies, Boulder Field is a massive field of giant size boulders. There is a base camp there so you can actually camp out and hike the summit the next morning instead of doing it all in one day as I did.

Here we get the first good shots of the face of Long’s Peak known as the Diamond. You can still see a good amount of snow and ice in some of the large crevasses. To the right of the second and third photos you can see the Keyhole. This is where you pass through to the trail on the back side of the peak. It looks deceptively small here. In my next post I’ll post some close ups of the Keyhole and you’ll see what I mean—it’s huge!

Long’s Peak Hike: Before Boulder Field

Here are a few shots I took on my hike to Long’s Peak Summit. These photographs were taken before reaching the area known as Boulder Field, which, as the name implies is a massive field of huge boulders.

I was about 3 hours into the hike when these pictures were taken. Everywhere you turn your head there were massive mountain ranges and huge piles of rocks. By this time I was beginning to feel very small. I got smaller as the day progressed.

Long’s Peak Sunrise

I hiked to the summit of Long’s Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park on Friday. I signed in at the trail head at 4:30 am. I was able to photograph the sunrise a little over two hours into the hike about 500 feet above the tree line.

It was a beautiful beginning of an incredible day that I will never forget. The entire hike took me 14 hours to complete. I’ll be posting photos of the hike in coming blogs.

Long’s Peak Summit

I hiked to the summit of Long’s Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park yesterday. It was an incredible experience…more than I can even put into words at the moment.  For now I’ll just say I am especially grateful to have made it back in one piece.

I’ve got lots of photos which I’ll post later. In the photo shown here I’m standing on the highest point with the US Geological Survey marker under my left foot reading 14,255 feet above sea level.

Colorado Fires Nearly Contained

The Fourmile Canyon fire in Boulder is nearly 90% contained. Officials are now investigating the possibility that the fire may have started in a resident’s fire pit that was not fully extinguished.

Meanwhile, a few miles north the Loveland fire also seems to be under control after burning 900 acres. The fire started on Sunday morning. Fortunately, the crews and resources from the Boulder fire were quickly able to get the upper hand on that one.

Although the fires are mostly under control heavy aircraft are still flying overhead throughout the day. Hopefully, life will get back to normal sometime soon.

Another Colorado Wildfire 9-12-10

As I left church this morning I was shocked to see another huge plume of smoke billowing North of Boulder. I drove north up 75^th street and then west on Hygiene Road. I took a few photos along the way. I noticed the helicopters and tankers were already moving in.

It’s is almost unbelievable to have another fire like this right on the heels of the other one. The good news is there is a large number of firefighters and resources in the general area from the Boulder Fire.

I don’t know much about this fire yet. Early reports specify the location west of Loveland and north of Carter Lake. This is approximately 20-25 miles north of Boulder although the smoke is now filling the sky just like the Boulder Fire.
