Boulder Colorado Sunrise Bike Ride

Boulder Colorado Sunrise Bike Ride

Boulder Colorado is one of the most bicycle friendly communities in the country. There are bike paths and bike lanes going in nearly every direction all over town. Just about everywhere you go you’ll people of all ages on bikes.

One of my favorite rides is to go north on hwy 36 in the very early morning. I like to leave early because it’s super quiet and there is very little traffic. As an added bonus I frequently enjoy the morning sunrise.

This morning the Boulder Colorado Sunrise was spectacular. I stopped a few miles north of the city limits and took the series of photos shown below. If you enjoy bicycling, Boulder Colorado is the place to be.

Boulder Recreational Center Yoga Class

Boulder Recreational Center Yoga Class

YogaI had an interesting experience in yoga class this morning at the North Boulder Recreational Center. The instructor, Ravi Dykema, who is a extraordinarily gifted yoga teacher, led the class as one continuous, harmonious flow. It was wonderful, even blissful at times. I completely lost track of time and felt myself immersed in a joyous sensation of being in the moment.

At one point Ravi described how Yoga is about sensing into the body to become aware of where we are contracting and then to relax the contraction. His explanation was simple yet profound. Our physical contractions are a type of self-defense designed to prevent us from feeling something that we are blocking on some level. Yoga helps to relax the contraction and integrate the feelings.

As he guided us through a couple of initial moves I felt a deep relaxation come up from within followed by an instantaneous emotional wave that swept over me. It was like being splashed by water at the seaside. It lasted only a few seconds and then it was gone. The rest of the class sort of floated. The peaceful sensation has remained with me most of the day.

The classes are held at the North Boulder Recreational Center on Tuesday mornings from 8:45 to 9:45 am. There are lots of great classes to choose from. If you have a chance, drop by and check it out. You’ll be glad you did.

Greener Pastures

Greener Pastures

A road less traveled can sometimes lead to greener pastures. When we venture onto a new path or approach things in a way less common we open ourselves to new experiences. And new experiences can lead to new opportunities.

Yesterday I bicycled up in the mountains above Boulder. I followed the paved road above Jamestown until it became dirt. Most cyclist turn around at that point and go back down the mountain. I continued on and found some extraordinary views.

The dirt road went for a couple of miles before leading me to a paved road called the Peak-to-Peak Highway with majestic mountain views. It was well worth the effort.

Obstacles are meant to be overcome. When you face something challenging, consider pressing on and remain open to the possibilities. Of course, there are practical considerations, but in many cases you may be presented with new experiences and new opportunities.

A Tree Stump Can Be a Work of Art

A Tree Stump Can Be a Work of Art

My early morning bike ride today took me north on highway 36 to Niwot road. From there I went east to 95th St. and then south to Valmont before heading back into Boulder. I rode a total of 23 miles with an average speed of 15.3 mph.

When I passed through Niwot I noticed the wooden sculpture was unveiled. The sculpture is carved directly in the wood of a large tree trunk. There are actually two sculptures on two different tree trunks, but it was so early the light was only bright enough on one of them to photograph.

In the photo you’ll see the artist’s scaffolding is still in place so they must not be finished. I am not sure who is doing the sculpture but they are true works of art. I think it is amazing how a simple tree stump can be converted into an extraordinary one-of-a-kind sculpture.

Boulder Colorado Sunrise Bike Ride

Boulder Colorado Sunrise Bike Ride

I started my ride at 5am this morning. I did a route I am now calling the Lyons Loop. From Boulder I went north on hwy. 36 to Lyons and then looped around to 75th st and back down to Boulder.

The ride is just over 32 miles and I finished in two hours and nine minutes with an average speed of 15.3 mph. It was one of my best rides yet. I made it back home in plenty of time to make the early service at Columbine Unity Church.

I took a couple of photos of the sunrise north of Boulder. On the way back to Boulder I snapped a couple of shots of the balloons taking off from the airport. The ride was great and I am feeling super-fantastic.

Boulder Colorado Early Morning Bike Ride

Boulder Colorado Early Morning Bike Ride

I was on my bike shortly before 6am this morning. I decided to take a different route so I headed north on Hwy. 36. When I got to Lyons I took Hwy. 66 east to 75th St. I took 75th south back to Valmont and then back to my apartment.

The whole ride was just over 32 miles and took me a little over two hours. I averaged just over 15 mph for the ride which is consistent with my recent rides over the past week or so.

The scenery was incredible. I especially enjoyed coming back down 75th St because it’s far enough east to give an awesome view of the Flatiron Range. I hadn’t cycled down that road before so it was full of surprises.

The view of the mountains, the balloons lifting off, the cows and the huge hay bails were a sight to be seen. I probably would have finished much sooner except I stopped several times along the way and took photographs. No regrets though…I’m glad I did!

Boulder Colorado River Rock Art Returns

Boulder Colorado River Rock Art Returns

Late yesterday I was walking along Boulder Creek at Eben Park and came on a fresh stand of river rock art. The artist was there just finishing up for the day. Unfortunately, there was not enough light to photograph so I went back this morning and took a bunch of shots.

This collection is probably his best yet. Some of the rocks seem to defy gravity. The stand looks like a small city—almost surreal. It is interesting how the art arises out of the waters and then gradually returns as entropy takes over. In the meanwhile, the art graces the riverbed and attracts lots of attention from passers by.

Boulder Colorado Fireworks in the Rain

Boulder Colorado Fireworks in the Rain

Last night I attended the fireworks celebration at Folsom Field in Boulder. Just before the show was supposed to begin it started raining. The rain continued to fall pretty hard over the next hour or so. Not only was it raining but it was quite cool.

Many people left because of the rain and many others didn’t even bother to come. The crowd was well below the 25,000 that were expected. But the show must go on—rain or shine. While most of the festivities were canceled the Colors were presented and the fireworks commenced in the rain.

It was kind of surreal to be out in the pouring rain watching an extravagant fireworks show, but it was well worth it for those of us that stayed. And wouldn’t you know it, the rain stopped shortly after the fireworks show was over.

Below are a few photos I was able to take in the rain.

Boulder Colorado Fourth of July Celebration at Folsom Field

Boulder Colorado Fourth of July Celebration at Folsom Stadium

Tomorrow night at Folsom Stadium on the campus of Colorado University is Boulder’s spectacular fireworks celebration. The gates will open at 8pm and the program starts at 8:30. The photo below shows downtown Boulder in the center and Folsom Field on the right.

Boulder

A variety of activities are planned including community performances, and a traditional crowd sing-a-long. The Color Guard will perform just before the fireworks begin at 9:30 pm.

FireworksThe theme of this year’s celebration is, ‘Tribute to America.’ The show is designed to honor our country’s servicemen and women. The show will include 1,700 individual fireworks featuring a total of 2,400 explosions all set off to a custom soundtrack of inspirational music.

Boulder Colorado is a wonderful place to live, work and play. The fourth of July celebration at Folsom Field captures the spirit and zest of life here in a delightful way for all to enjoy. There is free parking in addition to free bus ride to and from the event.

I’ve lived in Boulder since 2006 but I have never attended the festivities. Instead, I have always admired from a distance. This year, I am planning to be there along with approximately 25,000 others in a front row seat.

The video below captures a little slice of last year’s Boulder Colorado fourth of July celebration at Folsom Field. Rumor has it that it gets better and better every year. I hope to see you there.

Boulder Colorado Morning Mountain Views

Boulder Colorado Morning Mountain Views

My bicycle route this morning was north on Hwy. 36 to Neva/Niwot road and then east to 95th Ave. From there I went south to Valmont and West back into Boulder. The loop is about 25.5 miles and currently takes me about an hour and 40 minutes to complete.

Today I decided to take my camera with me. As I was heading south on 95th I got some great shots of the early morning sun on the Front Range. There were some balloons lifting off from Boulder Airport which looked great with the mountain backdrop.
