A Story of Hope and Song Emerges From the Rubble in Hati After 6 Days
Like millions of people all over the world I have been deeply touched by the horrific disaster in Hati. I lived in California for nearly 30 years so I have experienced many earthquakes including the 7.0 Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989.
I was living in the Santa Cruz mountains at the time just a few miles from the epicenter. Although the damage was severe and widespread, we got through it because of the infrastructure we have in place—police, fire department, emergency services, food, water, resources, etc.. The people in Hati are not so fortunate. Their resources are stretched beyond their capacity and their ability to cope is greatly diminished. Yet miracles are happening in Hati every day now.
On last night’s evening news there was a story of hope amid the rubble and misery of the earthquake. A woman who worked in a bank was pulled from the debris after being buried alive for six days. What is amazing is her husband was there when she was found and had never given up hope that she was still alive.
Workers had been clearing debris when they heard a sound. Frantically, they began digging but they didn’t have the tools to clear the rubble. And then a team of firemen from Los Angeles arrived and went to work.
The woman was rescued and reunited with her husband. As she was pulled out of the rubble and she was still on her back in the dirt, she began singing a joyous song of praise for life. It was quite moving and even chokes me up just to think about it as I write. This video captured the whole scene.

John - I too watched as she was pulled fromt the rubble. To see her then drive off in the car with her husband to see for herself, the devastaion - WOW! I say, Who's next?
John, thank you for that. I saw on CNN the day after the quake the rescue of a young girl 13 as her brother and uncle watched. I remember thinking thank god for a miracle. In my prior job I worked with several Hatian's one was on vacation visiting her family in Haiti. Thank god she and her family are fine, unfortunately, several others have lost family memebers. But in spite of all the destruction and dealth a small miracle happens.
Thank you for sharing this amazing story. This made the tears flow this morning! What a blessing for this man and wife. Not all are so fortunate. We certainly need to count our blessings on a daily basis.
Yup, pass me a tissue! What an amazing story! If everyone could have that kind of will, fight, and faith. To have something so wonderful come out of something so horrible, it's just incredible.
Thank You for sharing.
John, thanks for posting this video. Amazing story. We take far too much for granted.
And to think of the things that I complain about each day. Internet connection to slow, cable channels not working, short sale banks dragging their feet. That video really put some things into perspective.
