A Cold Winter Day In Tampere, Finland

A Cold Winter Day In Tampere, Finland

My wife Hannele is visiting her home country of Finland and has a couple of more weeks to go on her stay. She is there to see family and friends in the small town of Tampere about 200 kilometers northwest of Helsinki.

Hannele took the photos below a couple of days ago. While the scene could be something you may expect to see many places here in the U.S., the photo doesn’t do justice to the experience of winter in Finland.

The temperature is often 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, or more, below zero. There are only a few hours of daylight each day, and it is not uncommon to go many weeks without ever seeing the sun.

Ok, you are in Boulder and your wife is Finnish!!! I'm from Finland :) and don't live that far away from you guys. I wish I was visiting relatives but maybe I'll wait until summer time - for obvious reasons. ~Rita

Yep, that looks cold. Way too cold for my blood. I grow back east and it was not uncommon to see the sun for long periods of time. Living in CA, we don't have that very often. But during April/May cloudy days and some light rain, is not that unusual. But for snow, you have to go to the higher elevations.

I think if I were to visit Finland, it would have to be a whole lot warmer. But I am sure the Fins are used to it and love their homeland. A delightful culture and people. Have met a few and was never disappointed. Loving, friendly and the sort you would want for neighbors and friends.

Moi Rita...What a surprise-small world and getting smaller! Would love to connect sometime. Maybe after Hannele gets back we'll be in touch.

Steven...You are absolutely right, it is very cold there.

Bill...You're right on all fronts. Summers in Finland are the best--long days, warm and beautiful forest and lakes everywhere.

John ~ Wow, that looks cold.  Do people really ride their bikes there in winter?  Or was somebody caught off guard?

John, that really looks cold!  I will stop complaining about the cold here!

Melinda...Yes, they actually do ride their bikes in the winter. The bicycle tires have studs in them just like snow tires on cars.

Tony...You and me both ;-) Anytime I feel like it is cold I just remind myself what it was like when I was living there. Weather here is mild by comparison.

BRRRRRRR! Too cold for me, but a lovely place! Couldn't imagine out riding a bike in that!
