What Makes A House A Home?
I was walking along the trail beside Boulder Creek a few days ago and came across this cozy little dwelling. It certainly looked attractive although I couldn’t get much more than my big foot in there. Even still, there was something special calling out to me. It made me thing about a comment I once heard about what makes a house a home. I suppose we all have our own idea about what that means.
The main differences probably center around those parts of our house that we have a more personal or emotional connection with. Or maybe it’s something else. Clearly, there does seem to be some sort of a distinction between the two.
I think it’s harder to sell houses. Homes, on the other hand have a way of selling themselves. That’s because they have a way of speaking to the potential buyers as if to say, this is it—you’re home.
I am curious what others may think. What makes a house a home?

My wife's cooking and my children's voices. That makes the place home for me. Sometimes when she plays the piano everyone sort of gravitates nearby, even the dog.
John, I think it is the critter person that is living there that make a house a home. We use to come to Boulder often when we lived in Westminster; some 16 years ago now.
John, My little dog greeting me at the door and my husband saying 'are you done working for the day?' - they both make me feel at home and glad to be here. I do feel bad, though, lately the answer is ' no, not quite done.'
I sell myself to my clients as the best agent to represent them. Then I let them choose their house. I can tell when they feel at home in it - they start verbalizing where they will put a certain chair, where they will be sitting at breakfast. When they start talking about the activities that they will be involved in and the way the sunlight will hit at certain times of the day, I know that they feel at home.
Another good reason for the seller not to be present during a showing, BTW. :)
Hi John,
I was amazed when I saw your photos as I just finished telling my youngest son a bedtime story that I made up about a little boy who lived out in the woods by himself and had a hollowed out tree set up as his home. He lived quite the happy and adventurous life. He loved the story and now I will have to show him your blog in the morning!
I feel that home is the place where you feel comfortable, safe, and happy, with family all around and pets to care for and love you back. A garden out back and home cooked meals. Memories to share forever.
Enjoy your weekend!

Hi John, I love this critter's home that you found, I hope it faces south to take advantage of the warm sun in winter! I think home is the place that you come to at the end of the day with family and/or pets who love you and are happy to see you.
John ~ loved your photos! What an interesting tree. To me a home is where your memories are. I heard another agent say this," A home is where a family lives, but once they become sellers, you sell a house, not a home." I think that is how she put it. When I come home, my dog gives me the best greeting I could ever ask for. Great post.
Our homes are where we store stuff while we go to work to make money to buy more stuff to store in our homes. LOL
Gosh John your photo was not what I expecting while reading your blog. I must say you are very brave to poke your head in there, I'd be afraid a varmint might take a nibble out of me.
Home is where my husband is and bottle of decent Cabernet too ;)
