10 Seconds of Grace

Lee.Hill.Road-110 Seconds of Grace

I had a very close call during a bicycle ride this morning. I was cycling over Lee Hill Road above Boulder on my way to Jamestown. After crossing over the summit at just over 7,000 feet I was traveling at about 30 mph downhill toward Left Hand Canyon.

As I was going down the hill my intuition told me to be extra careful and slow down. The hill was super steep. So even though I could have gone much faster I began tapping my brakes and slowed down to about 20 mph.

Looking ahead I saw a car coming up the hill and around the corner. As it rounded the sharp curve it swerved across the opposing lane (my lane) and onto the opposite shoulder before correcting and getting back in their lane.

Lee.Hill.Road-2The whole thing unfolded just a few hundred feet in front of me. I estimate if I have been 8-10 seconds ahead of where I was there would have been an awful head-on collision between me and the car.

Needless to say, it was a little too close for comfort. The driver didn’t seem bothered at all. His correction seemed almost casual. It all happened so fast it didn’t occur to me until later how close I may have come to death.

And that is when I began to feel the grace of it all. I thought back over the morning of some of the various  things that gave me that extra 8-10 seconds on the clock—that extra sip of coffee before heading out the door, stopping for a quick drink of water coming up the hill, listening to my intuition telling me to slow down.

So I am here and I am grateful to be alive. Overall it was an incredible ride. I’ll devote another post just for the bicycle ride. For now, I am savoring the grace of a few seconds that probably saved my life.

Every moment is precious. Don’t take anything for granted.

John,

I'm glad you're ok...I can't believe you were composed enough to write this post. You were on the beam and your intuition was sharp...it's God given... It's important that you shared the story.

Stay well, stay close to his Grace.

God Bless,

Sergio

Indeed, it takes only a second - be careful out there on those roads!

John,  I am so glad to hear you are OK- I have learned over time, that I always listen to that little voice (intuition) and when I'm slowed down waiting in line, or waiting at an extra red light---I just figure it's for a reason.  There are no accidents.

John, Be careful out there.  My sister use to represent a company where the owner hit a bicycle rider killing her. He was reaching for a cell phone and swerved when it happened.  I have driven hands free ever since. He had stopped for a few beers was not sloppy drunk but because of the few beers he was convicted for vehicular manslaughter.  It was very sad and made me realize how quickly a life changing event can happen.

Sergio...Thanks for the message. I think it didn't really hit me until I was back home. I kind of pushed it out of my mind to finish the ride. Grace is always there if we just pay attention. I'm grateful I was alert to it at that moment.

Williiam & Barbara-Jo...A moment indeed is all it takes, and each one is a precious gift. Thanks for your comments.

Mary...Thanks so much...I agree, in the big picture there are no accidents. It's grace that can help expand our field of view to recognize that.

Marchel...Yes, it only takes a second of distraction to change a life forever. Nothing should be taken lightly--neither driving nor cycling.

John,

As I've been "learning" how to drive on these windy, hilly, CO roads, I've found myself thinking how dangerous they could be if someone is not paying attention or driving just a little too fast.

I'm glad that you were blessed and managed to continue your ride unharmed.  I pray that you and the other bicylists that love these beautiful rodes can continue to ride safely.
