Going Up!
Tomorrow I’ll do a solo bike ride from Boulder to Estes Park and back. I’ve been training for this for about a month now and I am ready to go. My route will go up Lee Hill Drive to Left Hand Canyon then over to Jamestown. From there I’ll take Overland Drive to Peak-to-Peak Highway. I’ll turn left at Hwy. 7 and follow that to Estes Park. I’ll turn around within an hour and come back Hwy 7 to Lyons and then take Hwy 36 back to Boulder.
I estimate the total distance at about 95 miles and the peak elevation around 10,000 feet. This will be the first long distance ride for me in the Rocky Mountains and I am really looking forward to it. I’m not trying to set any records, just finish the ride on two wheels. I’ll post some photographs of the ride within a couple of days.
The photo below shows my bicycle, which I’ve had for nearly 30 years. I have logged thousands of miles on that bike—it has served me well. It’s an old racing frame that I modified for long distance.

Sounds like an awesome ride. I ride too but have not had the pleasure of riding in the Rockies. Was there once and saw some of the cyclist climbing the hills. Every time I am pushing a hill in NJ I just think what it would be like out in CO. Good luck, be safe and have fun.
Hey John,
Easy does it! I know you're experienced and don't need advise but be safe.
Remember to descend when your muscles get hard.... post some pic's when you can...
John...
That's quite an undertaking. It's not the distance, it's the elevation. One has to be very careful with those lower levels of oxygen.
Good luck and enjoy your ride!
Josef...It's all good. Maybe you'll make it out this way sometime. It's worth it even for one marathon downhill.
Sergio & Richard...thanks for the reminders. I'll stay safe and take lots of pics. I plan to finish on two wheels!
I wish you the best on your adventure, John! Have lots of fun, be safe and get good shots! That seems like a tremendous undertaking and I admire anyone who has the guts to try, let alone succeed.

Hi John, enjoy the ride and I am looking forward to your next blog to learn about your adventure.
Emcee & Barbara...Thank you for your comments--all is well, I returned in one piece.
All...I'll post a separate blog with some photos from the ride.
John, sounds like an incredible ride! We were up at 11,000 feet in Mammoth Lakes and it was hard to breathe - you must be in remarkable shape! :-) ~ Susan
John!
You were well prepared with that bag in the back...
